"INTARSIA TIPS ON-LINE" - #3
Every so often I talk with someone who hasn't heard of this tip even though it's been around several years now.
When cutting hardwood, especially cherry, it has a tendency to burn. This can be easily remedied by placing package tape on the wood. As shown in the photo below (looking right to left) I cut only about 3/8" into the 3/4" thick cherry before the edge started burning. However, when I reached the center where a piece of tape was placed, the burning immediately stopped. Once through the tape the burn started again.
I don't know how or why this works, but as you can see it does. Glue your pattern down as usual then cover it with tape. Bore any necessary holes and cut. To prevent dust from adhering to the tape wipe the surface with an anti-static sheet, the kind you toss in the clothes dryer. If you find the glare annoying, spray a light coat of matte matte finish on it.
You could put the tape on first then the pattern, but it can be a bear to remove.
